This project creates a new Accessory Dwelling Unit on a steep hillside property in San Anselmo by placing the living space beneath a simple, open carport. The design avoids blocking neighborhood views and keeps the structure low in the landscape, allowing the home to blend naturally into the wooded setting while providing much-needed additional housing.
Inspired by the familiar carports found throughout the neighborhood, the new structure uses warm wood siding, a clean roofline, and a small footprint that fits comfortably into its surroundings. The butterfly-shaped roof brings in natural light, supports future solar panels, and helps manage stormwater. An elevator and ground-level entry ensure the space can serve people of all ages and abilities. New off-street parking improves safety on the narrow hillside road and reduces congestion.
Throughout the project, care was taken to respect the character of the neighborhood and the sensitive hillside environment. Native landscaping, low-impact lighting, and thoughtful placement of windows and pathways help protect privacy, views, and the natural setting. The result is a small, well-integrated home that provides flexibility for the property owner while supporting the broader community’s goals for gentle, context-sensitive housing.
