Biophilic Interior Design
Avivo Village Central introduces a proven indoor-shelter model to St. Cloud by converting an underutilized site into a purpose-built facility with 48 private dwelling units for adults experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Each resident has a secure, lockable room within a climate-controlled environment that supports privacy, stability, and daily continuity.
The facility includes wraparound service spaces for case management, health and behavioral health support, employment services, and onsite security. Shared common areas accommodate meals, programming, and community interaction. Outdoor areas provide dedicated space for pet care, gathering, and recreation.
AWH Architects used trauma-informed design principles to guide decisions related to layout, circulation, lighting, acoustics, and material selection. Biophilic-informed interior finishes introduce nature-based colors, textures, and patterns that reduce stress and support overall well-being. Energy modeling was used to evaluate envelope performance and inform decisions that reduce operational energy and improve long-term efficiency.
Building on lessons learned from the Minneapolis Avivo Village, AWH focused improvements on the building envelope, the organization of programmatic spaces, and the quality of resident amenities. The triangular site allowed for improved access to a wider variety of amenities and more direct connections to on-site services. Early input from Avivo staff and resident surveys guided these enhancements. The design also increases access to nature through varied outdoor spaces that accommodate different needs for privacy, activity, and social connection. Additional improvements include indoor bike storage for residents and expanded storage areas for Avivo staff to support bulk donations and onsite operations.
Avivo Village Central provides St. Cloud with a functional, durable, and replicable facility that prioritizes privacy, safety, and reliable service delivery. The project demonstrates how targeted design strategies can improve outcomes for residents and strengthen the community’s response to homelessness.
