Preserving Architectural Heritage

In the heart of Lanesboro, MN, history whispers through cobblestone streets and timeworn facades. The Lanesboro Historic District, a sanctuary of heritage, beckons residents and visitors alike to step into a bygone era. Yet, the tale doesn't end here.

In the summer of 2014, the City of Lanesboro envisioned expanding its cherished National Historic District. Recognized as one of the Top 12 Small Town Art Communities, Lanesboro's commitment to preserving its cultural fabric led to the contemplation of a significant expansion northwards, embracing not just space but a renewed legacy.

Answering the city's call, AWH Architects, guardians of architectural heritage, delved into the task. Armed with insights from prior reports, research, and consultations with the State Historic Preservation Office, AWH embarked on a mission to advocate for the expansion's historic significance. Their conclusion echoed through time: the proposal was not just worthy but a testament to the city's ongoing commitment to SOCIAL heritage.

In 2016, the National Park Service (NPS) granted its approval. The expanded Historic District, a tapestry of narratives stitched together, became more than just a formal acknowledgment—it was a nod from the past, a gift for the future. REUSE, not just of physical spaces but of the stories embedded in the very fabric of the district, became a living testament.

Lanesboro Historic District Expansion is not merely about bricks and mortar; it's a collective effort to safeguard the essence of a community. Every acre added is a promise kept—a promise to preserve the SOCIAL heartbeat of Lanesboro, a promise to REUSE the stories etched in every lane, corner, and facade.
