Adaptive and Resourceful Reuse
Located in Richfield, MN, 6440 Lyndale Avenue wasn't just a small strip mall; it was a piece of local history frozen in time since the 1970s. When the project landed on AWH's desk, previous plans had always leaned towards demolition, but new owners saw potential, and the project took on a new life.
AWH Architects, armed with a keen eye for potential, delved beyond the dated facade. To everyone's surprise, the team uncovered an impressive steel structure, a silent witness to the passage of time. Instead of erasing the past, the decision was made to celebrate and integrate this historic skeleton into the renewed design.
The new design, a harmonious blend of the existing steel structure and contemporary elements, brought freshness to Lyndale Avenue. Vertical metal panel siding, along with strategically placed storefront and clerestory windows, transformed the once dimly lit space into a beacon of modern elegance.
A standout feature of this renewal is the installation of a remarkable solar array comprising 130 panels. Positioned with precision, it's not just a functional addition but a symbol of the commitment to sustainable practices. This solar array is a powerhouse, projected to produce a commendable 60 megawatts per year, contributing both to environmental stewardship and the building's energy needs.
What was once partially abandoned has now become a bustling hub of activity. The revitalized 6440 Lyndale Avenue stands as a testament to the power of renewal. The building has not only found new purpose but has also become a profitable venture, welcoming occupants with open arms, which includes space dedicated to Woodlake Veterinarian Hospital.
